    It’s used for digging.

  2. Spectre Says:

Normally a large tractor with an excavator boom and bucket on rear. Works same as larger units (Tracked) known as excavators

  3. bartolo1 Says:

It digs a hole in soil like your hand would in sand at the beach.

  4. Paul in San Diego Says:

It’s used to dig trenches, mostly. It’s a small, square-sided scoop on a boom on the back of heavy equipment. So, it’s perfect for digging straight, square trenches.

  5. Rex K Says:

Backhoes are designed primarily for digging..(trenches for water, sewer, gas, electrical lines etc.) Their power to dig or excavate, is provided by an integral hydraulic system..powered by a diesel engine..They are also equipped with a front-end loader which may be used for scooping & loading dirt, gravel, sand snow or other materials..leveling & landscaping previously excavated areas. Most plumbers rely on contractors with backhoes to install or repair sewer and/or water systems. There are many companies that build & sell backhoes..including John Deere, & Caterpillar. Like other industrial machinery..they most often come in the color of Yellow.
Backhoes are a wonderful piece of equipment..not be confused with their bigger brothers, the “track” models, which are designated as “Excavators”.
